Simmel stated in the introduction to the third edition of The Problems of History that “the spirit describes its coast and the rhythm of wave, in the stream of becoming, whereby it finds itself, and by doing so, it makes the stream of becoming a history.” Die Probleme der Geschichte (Munchen: Verlag Dunker and Humblot, 1923), VII; my translation.
