Proof of the existence of God

Here, I will explain further about a proof for the existence of God. Since Unification Thought is a theory based on God, we should necessarily offer some proof of His existence.

A. Traditional Arguments to Prove the Existence of God

(2) Cosmological Argument

This refers to a proof proposed by Thomas Aquinas (1224-75). He asserted that if we trace back the causal relationships of the movements of the physical world, we will finally reach the ultimate cause, namely, the First Cause, which is the original mover, or self-cause. He recognized this as God.

The problem is that this method of proof was established based on Aristotle’s methodology, in which he recognized an unmoved mover. Nonetheless, it is difficult to persuade atheists and materialists using this method.

The reason: They argue that there is no compelling reason why the First Cause of the material causal relationship must be God, and that the cause of matter cannot be anything other than matter, no matter how far back it is traced. From the perspective of materialism, if the First Cause of the universe were God, it would be possible to claim that even God is a material being.

(3) Teleological Argument

This is the argument that, just as the structure of the human body and physiological phenomena are purposive, the universe, composed of countless heavenly bodies, is a gigantic system of order formed by a certain purposive plan, and that the planner is God. Or, it is the view that the beauty and grandeur of nature compel us to believe that God, who possesses the highest wisdom, created the world.

Refutation: This method of proof is also difficult to overcome the claims of atheism or materialism, because atheism can explain the movement of the universe solely by the necessity of law. The teleological argument, which assumes that the phenomena of the universe are also purposive because the structure and movement of human organs are purposive, is a leap in logic, and the viewpoint that the movement of the universe is purely lawful can also be established.

(4) Moral Argument

This is a method that recognizes the existence of God as the source of the moral law that humans follow in daily life or the source of the moral world order. Also, as in the case of Kant, it is a method of proving the reality of the holy God as a standard for moral life, based on moral necessity. The view that conscience is the voice of God also belongs here.

Refutation: This theory is also difficult to overcome atheism, because atheism regards traditional morality and ethics merely as norms formed in feudal society—that is, feudal norms created by the ruling class of feudal society to maintain and strengthen their class rule.

[Conclusion] Thus, all traditional proofs for the existence of God merely logically vindicate God's existence for those who already believe in Him. That is, they are proofs from a theistic standpoint from the beginning. Therefore, these positions cannot find a common ground with atheism and are destined to run on parallel lines.

[Transition] In other words, to make followers of atheism recognize the existence of God, one must develop the logic from a common position with atheism. This is the method of proving God's existence by the hypothetical method.

B. Hypothetical Method

First, a hypothesis is a mere assumption or conjecture used to explain a certain object or phenomenon when its truth or falsity has not yet been proven by empirical methods.

However, the “hypothetical method” refers to a method of proving that such a hypothesis is true (a true theory) by verifying it through scientific observation or experiment. A common example: When a doctor treats a patient, they first hypothesize the cause of the disease (e.g., assuming a high-fever illness is 'influenza'). If the disease is cured according to that assumption, the diagnosis is correct (true); if the disease is not cured, the diagnosis is a misdiagnosis.

Scientific Example 1 (Atomism)

The atomic theory of the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus (c. 460–370 B.C.) was purely a simple hypothesis, but in modern times, his atomic theory has been scientifically verified and recognized as a true (established) theory.

Scientific Example 2 (Element)

This is a practical example of a hypothesis becoming an established theory when an unknown element (Germanium) predicted by Mendeleev (1834–1907), who created the periodic table of elements, was later discovered. The principle that a fact that is not yet scientifically clear is first established as a hypothesis, and if the conclusion derived (deduced) from that hypothesis is verified (confirmed) by scientific observation or experiment, the hypothesis is converted into an established or true theory, is the Hypothetico-Deductive Method applied to the proof of God's existence.

Since the hypothetical method is one of the methods of seeking truth recognized by natural science, even atheists must approve it. Put differently, if the proof of God's existence is done by such a hypothetical method, atheism must accept the reality of God.

(1) The Theory of the Original Image and Hypothesis

Proving God's existence in Unification Thought by the hypothetical method means making atheists first accept the theory concerning God’s attributes (i.e., the Theory of the Original Image) as a hypothesis, and then making them acknowledge this theory as true by showing that the conclusion derived from it completely and without exception coincides with the results of various experiments and observations achieved by natural scientists.

[Core Parts of the Theory of the Original Image]

First: ‘God is the neutral Subject of the Bipolarity of Sungsang and Hyungsang, and at the same time the neutral Subject of the Bipolarity of Yangseong and Eumseong, and Yangseong and Eumseong are the attributes of Sungsang and Hyungsang.’

Second: ‘God created all things through Give and Take Action between Sungsang (Subject) and Hyungsang (Object), centered on the purpose of creation. Give and Take Action takes place on the foundation of the Four Position Base, which has four types: internal and external, and automatic and developmental.’

Atheists will treat this theory concerning God's attributes as mere dogma and will never accept it. Therefore, only for atheists is this Theory of the Original Image treated only as a hypothesis, and instead, they are invited to participate in the work of its verification (i.e., confirmation).

Strictly speaking, the work of verifying a hypothesis is where the proponent of the hypothesis directly conducts scientific experiments and observations and then compares the findings (theory) with the conclusions derived from that hypothesis. However, in today's highly developed natural science, there is no need for such wasted effort; one only needs to confirm the consistency between this hypothetical conclusion and the achievements (scientific truths) already established by scientists through experiments and observations.

(2) Verification of the Hypothesis

Example 1: Bipolarity of Sungsang and Hyungsang

ⓐ Hypothesis: ‘God is the neutral Subject of the Bipolarity of Sungsang and Hyungsang. All things created by the Law of Likeness resemble God and form a unified body of Bipolarity.’

ⓑ Conclusion: ‘All created things, resembling God's Bipolarity of Sungsang and Hyungsang, must have an immaterial Sungsang aspect and a material Hyungsang aspect. That is, all created things, including minerals, plants, animals, and humans, without exception, possess these relative aspects of Sungsang and Hyungsang.’

ⓒ Verification: This conclusion is found to be in complete agreement with scientific facts in medicine, zoology, botany, and mineralogy.

Example 2: Bipolarity of Yangseong and Eumseong

ⓐ Hypothesis: ‘God exists as the neutral Subject of the Bipolarity of Yangseong and Eumseong (relative attributes), and all things created by the Law of Likeness resemble this Bipolarity of God and exist in a relative relationship of Yangseong and Eumseong.’

ⓑ Conclusion: ‘Created things must possess the relative attributes of Yangseong and Eumseong, or exist in a relative relationship of Yangseong individuals (elements) and Eumseong individuals (elements), resembling God's relative attributes of Yangseong and Eumseong.’

ⓒ Verification: This conclusion is found to be consistent with scientific facts in anatomy, zoology, botany, and atomic physics.

[Final Conclusion] As confirmed above, the hypothetical conclusion that ‘created things must exist in a relative relationship of Yangseong individuals (elements) and Eumseong individuals (elements)’ is consistent with the research results of natural science; therefore, the hypothesis of the Theory of the Original Image becomes a true or established theory.

[Concluding Remarks & Vision] I trust that this has clarified that the ‘existence of God’ can be most correctly proven by the hypothetical method.

[Appeal] No matter how much of an atheist one may be, once a theory concerning God is verified to be consistent with scientific facts by the hypothetical method, the scientific attitude is to humbly accept it as a true or established theory. Communist materialists, in particular, should realize that their unconditional rejection attitude is an unscientific attitude.

[Vision] The way to fundamentally resolve the great chaos within today's communist society (as well as the free world) is to remove all banners of atheism from the face of the earth and raise the banner of God high up to the North Pole of the globe. When all humanity unites under that one banner of God, not only will all chaos be fundamentally resolved, but the entire world will be unified, and the ideal world of love, freedom, prosperity, and peace—humanity's long-cherished dream—will finally be realized. This concludes the explanation of the proof of God's existence.
